NEW HAVEN HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO RECEIVE $3 MILLION FOR LEAD ABATEMENT EFFORTS - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, D-Conn. (3rd CD), issued the following news release:

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) announced that the New Haven Department of Health has been awarded a $3 million federal grant to continue their work on lead abatement throughout the city. This funding through the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will allow New Haven's Lead Based Paint Hazard Control Program - a collaborative partnership of the Health Department, the Livable City Initiative and the Yale/New Haven Lead Program and Regional Treatment Center - to continue to further reduce the incidence of childhood lead poisoning and abate 200 housing units. To assist New Haven's application for this competitive grant, DeLauro wrote to the Department of Housing and Urban Development in support of the project.

'We know that lead is highly toxic for children and has been connected with developmental problems and lower IQ levels. That is why I was pleased to support the City of New Haven's lead abatement effort,' said DeLauro. 'With its past federal funds, the City has already successfully abated over 750 homes using federal funds and created outreach activities to educate children and families throughout the city about the dangers of lead poisoning. This federal funding will allow them to continue their work that has effectively reduced the incidence of lead poisoning in children by 48 percent over five years. New Haven is also to be commended for receiving funds from this competitive grant.'Contact: Adriana Surfas, 202/225-3661.
