JAMES MONT LEWIS 1922 - 2010 - Idaho State Journal

SANDY, UT --James Lewis, longtime Pocatello resident , passed away peacefully June 21, 2010, at his home in Sandy, Utah, surrounded by his family.

Born November 9, 1922, in Alton , Utah, to George William Lewis and

Ruth Glover, he was the second of five children, all of whom preceded him in death. Raised in Kanab, Utah, he attended college in Cedar City, Utah, until drafted into the Navy during World War II. While stationed in Portland, Oregon, he met his eternal companion Grace Evelyn Lee at an LDS Church fireside. They corresponded regularly during his tour of duty, and were married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 18, 1946, three weeks after he was discharged. They raised their family in Pocatello, Idaho, where they lived until Grace passed away in May of 2007, after which he moved to Sandy, Utah, to be closer to family. They are the parents of four sons: Vern (Cheryl), West Jordan, Utah; Dean (Marilee), Delta, Utah; Bard (Kim), Mesa, Arizona; Lonnie (Barbara), Boise, Idaho. They have 16 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren.

A construction superintendent and carpenter by trade, he worked for C.H. Elle and Taysom Construction Companies. He constructed many buildings in Idaho, Oregon and Hawaii and was highly respected by those with whom he worked. After retirement, he was asked to be involved in the construction of the Portland Oregon LDS Temple, which he regarded as his finest project.

Mont loved sports, including Jazz basketball, fishing, bowling , golf and horseshoes. In their later years, he and Grace were snowbirds in St. George, Utah, where he regularly participated in the Huntsman World Senior Games in horseshoes. He was rated as one of the top players in the state.

His beautiful wife Grace became a victim of Alzheimer's disease, and he lovingly cared for her for 15 years as her condition slowly deteriorated. His example of love and devotion will never be forgotten. He finally had to rely on professional help for the last six weeks of her life.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as Bishop, High Counselor and in many callings with the youth. Although unable to serve a mission because of the war, he willingly shared his testimony of Jesus Christ to all.

His family wishes to thank Atria Senior Living Center and Haven Home Health Care and Hospice for their tender loving care, with a special tribute of gratitude to his angel nurse, Marcia Pinkerman.

Funeral services will be held at the Garden Cove Ward, 1925 West 9000 South, West Jordan, Utah on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. Friends and family may call prior to the services beginning at 10:00 AM.
